Science and environment

Hi Ali and all -

I'd be happy to cover the Forest story, if you'd like. I'm also working on a story about how PCBs have infiltrated the Norwegian fjords and are threatening to destroy fishing stocks there.

Here are a few other things going on that people might find of interest:

Saturday May 10: Restorative Justice, Quaker Dialogues with Juliet Lyon of the Prison Reform Trust and Marian Liebmann. It's at Friends House, from 2-5 pm. £6 entry fee.

Thursday May 15: Are Women Peaceful? Reflections on the role of women in peacebuilding. This is at University of Westminster, go to http://www.kent.ac.uk/clgs/events/annual_lecture08.htm

Sunday May 18 - Democracy and Dissent with Antonia Fraser, Tristram Hunt, and Geoffrey Robertson. £10, call 0207 709 709.

The Identity of Nations (I'll be going to this one)

Thursday May 22 - Global transport, poverty and climate change lecture at Portcullis House Westminster at 5 45 pm (I work here so I can cover this if no one wants to)

Tuesday June 3 (for later reference) - Security Lecture at the Smith Institute with Jacqui Smith. MUST BOOK A PLACE NOW - securityad@smith-institute.org.uk.

That list will be very helpful to us all. Thanks.
Juliana was interested in the forest story but she is doing another one at the moment and may be busy with the campaign, as she is campaign editor. I will ask her. Also, tomorrow (before 11am) I will post what stories each one is doing for May 16 deadline. But we should be working on others for Production Fortnight too.

Regarding the story on Norwegian fjords, it will only fit the news if it’s related to London. I am not sure if someone explained to you how we are handling international issues. Most our stories are international but they have to be based in London (London sources, concerning people here). Is your story related to London? If it’s not, maybe there is a way of making it relevant or connecting it to London in some way.

Stories 300-500 words, critical, London connection. We had an editorial meeting today and the editorial guidelines and statement will be up in the main blog soon.

One last thing, concerning the campaign (not sure if you know), we are using the topic of farming to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the food crisis. We are trying to come up with a solution through farming practices. If you have any ideas, let Juliana know. I think that the campaign details will be up in the main blog shortly.

That’s it for now. By the way, when will you be back?

See you,

Ali

Thanks, Ali. I will be in on Tuesday, and I will have severely reduced hours at NS so that I will be around a lot more this coming week.

I'm doing some research on the Norwegian fjords story - there may be a London connection. If not, I'll come up with something else.

"International issues" - what exactly falls into that category? (I guess it could be anything or everything).

Re: farming, we could do things about protesting palm plantations (they're growing in number to satisfy the demand for biofuel, and in the process endangering animals - it just came out that they're reducing the habitats of orangutans - and it's also cutting into the available arable land for food production. Might be an angle we can take? Also, we might take a hit at the issue of agricultural subsidies, and how its impeding farmers in developing countries from food production.

Just a few ideas, love to hear from other members of the group to see what everybody thinks.

Hi, Jax.
If you don't mind, I would like to include you on the campaign's blog. So we can keep on discussing with other members of the group.
About your suggestions, I think they are very interesting. Some of us are already writing some articles for the campaign. I don't know if you would like to write about these topics and if you have time to do it now... We have to present a few articles to Connie by next Wednesday, so let me know if you think you can contribute with an article.
Juliana.
